Ekiti Teacher Alleges Illegal Kidney Removal at EKSUTH
- Govt Appeals for Calm, Promises Transparent Investigation
A teacher in Ekiti State, Mr. Afolayan Joshua Adebayo, has accused the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) of removing one of his kidneys without his knowledge during a surgical procedure.
Speaking at a press conference in Ado-Ekiti, Mr. Afolayan said he sustained an injury in an accident in August 2025 and was later informed by doctors at EKSUTH that one of his kidneys had been affected.
He said further medical tests carried out at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, confirmed that his right kidney was damaged, while the left was in good condition.
According to him, he consented to a surgery in October to remove the affected kidney in order to prevent further complications.
However, he alleged that he has been unable to pass urine since the operation, despite having urinated normally minutes before going into surgery.
He claimed that several attempts to obtain explanations from the hospital were unsuccessful, prompting him to visit another medical facility, where he was allegedly told that he was now living without a kidney.
Adebayo, therefore, called on the Ekiti State Government to investigate the incident, saying he continues to experience pain and fears for his life.
Responding to the allegation, the Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Professor Kayode Olabanji, denied any wrongdoing by the hospital.
He explained that the patient had a structural abnormality in his kidney that required surgical intervention and that both kidneys were found to be fused together during the procedure, a rare medical condition.
Professor Olabanji insisted that EKSUTH does not engage in organ harvesting or transplant activities, describing the claim as baseless.
He added that the hospital has offered Mr. Afolayan free dialysis support pending the possibility of a transplant.
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government has appealed for calm.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, said the government is aware of the allegation and remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the safety of patients, adding that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
