The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is positioning itself as a new political force as more high-profile politicians, including governors and lawmakers, consider joining its ranks following the recent defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

SDP National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, confirmed the growing interest in the party, stating that El-Rufai’s decision has triggered a wave of political realignments.

“El-Rufai’s move has ignited a political shift. More prominent figures from the ruling APC and other parties are expected to follow suit,” Gabam said.

Although he did not disclose specific names, rumours suggest that former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, along with other political heavyweights from the Southwest, might also be weighing their options.

However, Fayemi has firmly denied reports of his defection, insisting that he remains committed to the APC.

“My attention has been drawn to a story circulating on several online platforms regarding my defection from the APC. As I have had cause to state in the past, I am a card-carrying foundation member of the APC, and this position has not changed,” Fayemi clarified.

Despite Fayemi’s denial, political analysts see El-Rufai’s departure as a sign of deeper divisions within the APC, with internal democracy and leadership struggles becoming more pronounced.

Gabam reiterated that the SDP remains committed to grassroots participation and will not be part of any political merger.

“The SDP is not in alignment with the proponents of a merger of political parties. It is a recipe for chaos,” he stated.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the shifting political landscape suggests that El-Rufai’s defection might just be the beginning of a broader realignment within Nigeria’s political space.
