Electoral Reforms: El-Rufai Reveals Why He Didn’t Join Peter Obi to Protest
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has explained why he did not take part in the recent protest against the National Assembly alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
El-Rufai said he would have joined the demonstration if he were in the country, stressing the importance of real-time electronic transmission of election results to curb electoral manipulation.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV, he criticised the Senate’s handling of the proposed electoral reforms, suggesting that political interests were delaying progress.
“It’s unfortunate I have not been able to return to Nigeria. I would have joined Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders in protesting to the National Assembly to restore the real-time and mandatory transmission of results from the polling unit,” El-Rufai said.
He argued that adopting real-time result transmission would make election rigging far more difficult, while accusing the ruling party of resisting the reform to protect its political survival.
The former governor added that the House of Representatives had already endorsed the reform, but the Senate had yet to follow suit.
