Resurgent Chelsea were on Saturday beaten by injury-ravaged Newcastle United 4-1 at St James’ Park.
Second-half goals from Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon proved the difference as Newcastle emphatically returned to winning ways in the Premier League.
Newcastle’s strike Alexander Isak had given the host the lead before Chelsea restored parity through Raheem Sterling’s delightful free-kick 10 minutes later.
Lascelles’ free header from Gordon’s cross gave the Magpies a 2-1 lead on the hour mark, before Joelinton capitalised on a Thiago Silva error to double the hosts’ advantage just 90 seconds later.
Chelsea were reduced to 10 men when Reece James was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Gordon before the former Everton man finished low to Sanchez’s left to complete the scoring late on.
The win moves Newcastle to within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham, while Chelsea’s fifth league defeat of the season leaves them just inside the top half.
