The Government of Equatorial Guinea has initiated legal proceedings against Baltasar Engonga, the former Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, over a shocking sex tape scandal that has sent ripples through the country.

According to a statement released by Jerónimo Osa Osa, the Minister of Information, Press, and Culture, the government is determined to hold Engonga accountable for acts that it described as “violations of the ethical and moral values of noble Equatorial Guinean society.”

The scandal came to light during a fraud investigation against the embattled ex-anti-graft chief. A search of his office and residence revealed over 400 sex tapes involving married women, including high-profile individuals such as ministers’ wives, the President’s sister, and the wife of the Director General of Police. These explicit recordings, reportedly made with consent, have since leaked online, sparking widespread outrage.

The government’s condemnation was swift. In an official statement, the administration expressed concerns about the damage to the country’s image and the erosion of public trust caused by Engonga’s actions. “This conduct undermines family and social cohesion and tarnishes the reputation of our nation,” the statement read.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has been tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the scandal, exploring possible administrative, civil, and criminal charges against Engonga and his alleged accomplices.

The government has also announced measures to tighten security in public offices, including the installation of surveillance cameras in courts and ministries to curb indecent acts.

Vice-President Teodoro Mangue has vowed to take decisive action against any official caught engaging in misconduct.

In a statement on Tuesday, he warned, “Any public servant found engaging in sexual acts at work will face severe sanctions. This is a flagrant violation of the code of conduct.”
