24 personnel medical team have been sent to Somali by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health (FMoH) on Wednesday to provide assistance for those injured during unrest that hit the eastern Somali regional state.
This was disclosed by the Foreign Minister, Amir Aman, who said the team would primarily be dispatched to Jijiga city, capital of Somali regional state, which during the weekend, saw deadly unrest.
The unrest left an unknown number of people dead and injured with scores of private homes and businesses damaged.
A witness in Jijiga city said the unrest started on Saturday morning when soldiers were dispatched to the regional parliament, tv station and palace, reportedly to arrest high-level officials including Abdi Omar Mohammed, President of Somali regional state.
The army intervention comes amid reports of tension between the Ethiopian Federal Government and Somali regional state president over allegations of grave human rights abuses in Mohammed’s administration.
