Ex-Abia Deputy Governor Dumps PDP
Former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ude Oko Chukwu, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his long-standing association with the party.
In a resignation letter dated August 5, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of Ndi Elu Ward, Nkporo, Ohafia Local Government Area, Oko Chukwu said his decision was based on personal reasons.
The letter, received and acknowledged by the ward leadership on August 7, read in parts, “I write to formally inform you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately (7th August 2025).
“You may wish to note that I am resigning due to personal reasons. While it was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action for me at this time.
“I am most grateful for the opportunities the Party availed me to serve at various levels and appreciate the experience and knowledge gained during my membership of the Party.”
Oko Chukwu, who served as Deputy Governor from May 2015 to May 2023, expressed gratitude to the PDP for its support and wished the party well in its future endeavours.
His exit from the PDP comes days after he openly endorsed the re-election of Governor Alex Otti.
Following a closed-door meeting with the governor at his Nvosi residence, Oko Chukwu told journalists, “Going by what he has done so far, you will discover that without mincing words, he has earned himself another tenure.”
He commended Otti’s performance in road infrastructure, particularly in Abia North, Aba, and Umuahia, as well as the governor’s focus on health, education, and sports.
Reacting to the endorsement, PDP Acting Chairman Abraham Amah criticised Oko Chukwu, describing his move as “a survivalist instinct dressed in borrowed robes of loyalty.”
Amah accused the former deputy governor of trying to reposition himself politically and urged him to at least acknowledge the PDP, which he said gave him twenty years of political opportunity.
