Former deputy governor of Rivers State, Senator Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Her defection was announced during the Senate plenary on Tuesday when Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, read her letter on the floor of the chamber.

Harry-Banigo, who represents Rivers West Senatorial District, said her decision was informed by the lingering crisis within the PDP.

She also declared support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the leadership of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Earlier, six members of the House of Representatives and two senators from Rivers State had also defected to the APC.

The House of Representatives members are Dumnamere Dekor, representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency; Solomon Bob, representing Abua/Odual and Ahoada East Federal Constituency; Hart Cyril, representing Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency; Victor Obuzor, representing Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema/Ndoni Federal Constituency; Blessing Amadi, representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency; and Felix Nweke, representing Eleme/Oyigbo/Tai Federal Constituency.

The senators were Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East, and Allwell Heacho Onyesoh, who represented Rivers East.

However, Mpigi died last month.
