Ex-Student Leader, Nwoye Emerges APC Governorship Candidate In Anambra

A former student union leader, Tony Nwoye has emerged winner of the Anambra State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election.

He will run against incumbent Governor Wille Obiano of APGA on November 18.

Nwoye, a member of the House of Representatives, scored 2,146 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Senator Andy Uba who got 931 votes.

Eleven aspirants contested for the Anambra APC governorship ticket.

The results were announced on Sunday by the Chief Returning Officer, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State.

According to Governor Shettima, George Moghalu also polled 525 votes, Bart Nwibe scored 414 and John-Bosco Onunkwo scored 85 votes.

Other results are Madu Nonso – 21 votes, Nwike Patrick – 20, Obidigbo Chike – 22, and Okonkwo Donatus – 10.

5,430 delegates from the 21 local government areas of the state participated in the exercise.

While presenting a copy of the election result to Nwoye, Shettima urged him to do everything to ensure that APC won the Nov.18 governorship poll.

In his acceptance speech, Nwoye described the process that led to his emergence as “thorough” and promised to led the party to victory.

He studied medicine at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and at the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

The APC candidate hails from Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area, the same area with incumbent governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano.

He is a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra and its governorship candidate in the 2013 election.

Nwoye won the election to the National Assembly in 2015 on the platform of PDP.
