Exam Malpractice: ICAN Probes Viral Video Of Impersonation Scandal As Commissioner Denies Involvement
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has launched a probe into a viral video allegedly showing cases of impersonation during its ongoing examinations.
In one of the videos, which spread widely across social media platforms, a man was apprehended for allegedly sitting the professional exam on behalf of a bank manager.
Another clip captured a woman claiming she was writing the same test for a commissioner in Taraba State.
The scandal has raised public concerns about the integrity of the institute’s examination processes, with ICAN vowing to deal decisively with anyone found culpable.
In a statement signed by its Registrar/Chief Executive, Lanre Olasunkanmi, ICAN reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against examination malpractice.
“The Institute’s examination processes are guided by globally accepted standards of integrity, and any attempt to compromise them is treated with utmost seriousness,” Olasunkanmi stated.
He added that a thorough investigation had commenced and assured stakeholders that disciplinary measures would be taken against offenders to protect the credibility of the ICAN qualification.
Meanwhile, the commissioner mentioned in the viral video has publicly denied any involvement, insisting that the claim was false and malicious.
He described the allegation as a desperate attempt to tarnish his reputation, urging ICAN and security agencies to ensure a transparent investigation.
Reactions have continued to trail the incident, with many Nigerians calling for stiffer penalties against those attempting to undermine professional examinations. Some stakeholders have also urged ICAN to strengthen its biometric verification and surveillance systems to prevent future breaches.
The institute assured members of the public that its professional qualification remains credible and internationally respected, promising to release updates on the probe as it progresses.
