The Speaker of the State of Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun has felicitated Nigerians on this year’s June 12 Democracy Day.
The Speaker in a statement signed by him opined that since the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola, politicians have continued to ignore the beauty of credible elections.
He charged compatriots to explore the gains of June 12 towards deepening Democracy in the country.
The statement reads: “I, Speaker Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun felicitated with my fellow Nigerians on the democracy day celebration.
“Democracy Day marks the day the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule in 1960. It is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in year 2000.
“It is important to note that Democracy Day has been reviewed to be celebrated annually from May, 29 to June 12 to honour the heroes who championed the struggle and made extra-ordinary sacrifices for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria from 1999 till date.
“Although, the 1993 elections was adjudged to be the free and fairest elections in Nigeria but politicians have continued to ignore the beauty of credible elections.
“I charge my fellow compatriots to explore the gains of June 12, 1993 Presidential election towards towards deepening democracy in the country.
“Once again, I wish you happy Celebrations.”
