Two individuals were reportedly arrested at Bayero University Kano (BUK) for posing as lecturers and selling books to unsuspecting first-year students.
The arrest was documented in a special announcement signed by the university’s Acting Registrar, Bala G. Abdullahi.
The suspects, David Iluebe and Chike E. Eke from Edo and Delta states, respectively, falsely presented themselves as lecturers in a lecture hall in the Faculty of Engineering.
They reportedly offered a set of three textbooks covering subjects like English; Statistics; Nigerian People, and Culture, which were said to be necessary for students’ Continuous Assessment (C.A.).
The bulletin stated that the suspects coerced students into buying the books by threatening that failing to do so would result in failing their courses.
Speaking on the development, the Acting Registrar highlighted that students, worried about meeting course requirements, complied and purchased the books.
However, their behaviour raised suspicion, leading to their apprehension by university security after a complaint was lodged.
The two individuals are currently facing charges of criminal trespass, impersonation, and fraud. Initial investigations revealed that the suspects claimed to be the authors of the books they were selling.
Iluebe and Eke confessed to the accusations and clarified that they resorted to this fraudulent activity due to unemployment.
The suspects also admitted that this was their second attempt in Kano State, as they had previously operated at Kano State Polytechnic earlier this year.
