Tragedy struck in Akure, the Ondo State capital, as five members of a family, including a woman and her four grandchildren, lost their lives after consuming what is believed to be poisonous pap and fish.
The incident occurred on Atayese Street, Gaga area, off Idanre Garage in Oke Aro, Akure.
A neighbor, identified simply as Isaac, revealed that the victims had eaten pap, a common Nigerian staple, alongside fish, before succumbing to the suspected poisoning.
Isaac further revealed that two other children who shared the meal are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

“We were told that they took poisoned pap, but later, we also heard that they ate from fishes in a pond in the compound, which was said to have been contaminated,” Isaac explained.
Egunjobi, the head of the deceased family, confirmed the incident, suggesting that the fish from the contaminated pond might have been the source of the poisoning.
He expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of his family members, stating that the cause of the deaths is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, Funmi Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, said that the police had not yet received any official report on the incident.
“As I speak with you, the police do not have such reports at hand. We have not heard of the incident,” Odunlami-Omisanya told TheCable.
