Family Seeks Death Penalty As Indian Doctor’s Killer Receives Life Sentence
Sanjoy Roy, the rapist and murderer of an Indian doctor, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday for a crime that triggered nationwide protests and widespread hospital strikes last year.
The family of the 31-year-old doctor, whose bloodied body was found at a government hospital in Kolkata in August 2024, expressed shock at the sentence, saying they had hoped for the death penalty.
Judge Anirban Das ruled that the case did not meet the criteria for the death penalty as it was not among the “rarest of the rare cases” and ordered Roy to spend the rest of his life in prison.
The incident led to widespread outrage, with protests across Kolkata and other parts of India.
Doctors at government hospitals went on strike, demanding increased security.
The brutality of the crime also prompted the Supreme Court to establish a national task force to examine the security of healthcare workers.

Roy, 33, a civic volunteer at the hospital, pleaded not guilty and claimed he was framed.

Family members of the victim, whose identities are protected under Indian laws for cases of sexual violence, said they would continue to seek justice.

The crime has drawn comparisons to the 2012 Delhi bus gang rape and murder, a case that also sparked nationwide protests.
