FCT Police Deny Shooting NURTW Members
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has denied allegations that its officers shot at members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers during the leadership crisis at the union’s headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, and said seven suspects had been arrested over the disturbance.
In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described videos circulating on social media accusing police personnel of opening fire on NURTW members as false and misleading.
She said the claims were intended to stir public sentiment.
According to the police, the incident occurred on March 23, 2026, at about 7:00 a.m. after the Command received a distress call that about 300 persons armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows and arrows had stormed the NURTW national headquarters on Sapele Street, Garki II, and were removing items from the premises.
The police said the situation later turned violent when other union members attempted to stop them.
Adeh said seven suspects were arrested at the scene.
She added that the suspects had been charged before Magistrate Court 1, Wuse Zone 2, while normalcy had been restored in the area.
The development came as the leadership crisis within the union worsened, with Tajudeen Baruwa taking over the NURTW national secretariat in Abuja and displacing Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
