The Federal Government has announced that only eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic are accredited to award degrees to Nigerian students.

This disclosure was made by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, on Sunday in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

Mamman emphasized that the government’s decision to cancel around 22,700 certificates awarded to Nigerians by unapproved institutions in these neighboring countries is final.

He stated that these certificates, obtained from what the government has identified as “fake” universities, are not recognized and are tarnishing Nigeria’s image internationally.

According to the minister, this action is not harsh but necessary to maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s education system. The affected universities in Togo and Benin Republic have also been classified as illegal by authorities in their respective countries.

Mamman listed three accredited universities in Togo that are authorized to offer degree programs to Nigerian students: Université de Lomé, Université de Kara, and the Catholic University of West Africa. In Benin Republic, the five recognized institutions are Université d’Abomey-Calavi, Université de Parakou, Université Nationale des Sciences, Technologies, Ingénierie et Mathématiques, Université Nationale d’Agriculture, and Université Africaine de Développement Coopératif.

He also noted that many Nigerians who obtained these fake certificates never actually traveled to Togo or Benin Republic but instead acquired their degrees through fraudulent means, in collaboration with corrupt officials both within Nigeria and abroad.
