The Federal Government has postponed the much-anticipated meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was initially scheduled for today.
The meeting, intended to address the union’s grievances and prevent a looming nationwide strike, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 28.
ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the postponement to Channels TV on Monday.
Although no specific reasons were provided by the government for the postponement. However, the meeting, announced by the Minister of Education last Friday, was seen as a crucial step in averting industrial action by the union.
Last week, ASUU had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to honor the 2009 renegotiated agreement. The union’s demands include improved welfare for university lecturers, increased funding for public universities, and a halt to the proliferation of universities across the country.
