The federal government has formally taken over the ownership and management of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, from the Ogun State Government, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding during the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony.

The handover ceremony, according to NAN, featured the signing of the MoU between Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, marking the university’s transition from a state-owned to a federal institution.

Ahmad described the transfer as a defining moment in the history of the university and a clear demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to repositioning education as the bedrock of national renewal, stability and shared prosperity.

She said the transition of TASFUED into a federal university was a testament to years of hard work, creativity and steadfast commitment to the institution’s vision and mission.

“Tai Solarin Federal University of Education occupies a special place in Nigeria’s educational development as the premier university of education,” she said.

“The decision of the federal government to adopt the university from the Ogun State Government in March 2025 was deliberate, strategic and guided by national interest.”

“It reflects our firm belief that no nation can rise above the quality of its teachers and that no reform agenda can succeed without sustained investment in those who shape both present and future generations.”

The minister commended the Ogun State Government for what she described as its foresight, responsibility and exemplary stewardship of the institution over the years.

She noted that the signing of the MoU formally confirmed the institution’s integration into the federal university system.

Ahmad added that the process was further strengthened by the patriotic advocacy of well-meaning Nigerians, including Governor Abiodun.

Speaking at the event, Abiodun said the adoption of the university advanced national equity, noting that Ogun East Senatorial District could now boast of a federal university.

The governor also thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the takeover, saying the decision reflected the president’s belief that national renewal was closely tied to the quality of human capital development.

Earlier, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Adekunle Adeogun, identified student accommodation as a major challenge facing the institution.

He appealed to stakeholders to support the provision of safe and conducive living environments for students.

Adeogun also called for the expansion of lecture facilities to meet the growing demands of the university following its new federal status.
