FG To Review New Minimum Wage In Less Than Two Years

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has announced that the newly approved minimum wage will be reviewed in less than two years.

Speaking in Umuahia on Thursday after a meeting with labour leaders in Abia State, Onyejeocha reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to Nigerian workers, ensuring the minimum wage would be reviewed every three years as promised.

“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever,” she said.

“It used to be about five years, but now, in three years, which is less than two years, we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha stated.

She added, “It has been said and it has been documented.”

Onyejeocha explained that the president is deeply concerned about workers’ welfare and intends to fulfill every promise made to them.

She also addressed the labour leaders, emphasizing the importance of fostering peace and productivity. “I reminded them that we should have a strike-free year, where we will be able to work with the government in partnership, knowing that if we are in peace, we will be more productive,” she said.

The Abia Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Ogbomna Okoro, praised the minister for her efforts and expressed the union’s readiness to collaborate with her.

Earlier, Onyejeocha met with the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, where she outlined some of the Federal Government’s policies and urged traditional leaders to support these initiatives.
