European champions, Spain beat the Falconets of Nigeria 2-1 to advance into the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday.
Aitano Bonmati put the Spaniards ahead in the 13th minute with a lovely finish from inside the box, her first goal of the tournament.
La Rojita continued to pile pressure on the Falconets afterwards and were denied further goals by a fine save from Chiamaka Nnadozie and the referee’s inability to see that the ball crossed the goal line after hitting the underside of the crossbar in the closing stages of the first half.
They however got their reward when Patricia Guijarro got the second goal deep into first half added time.
The goal was Guijarro’s fifth of the competition which put her in the running for the top scorers award.
The Falconets started the second half the stronger of the two teams and threatened the Spaniard defence than they did in the first half.
The pressure paid off when Peace Efih reduced the deficit in the 57th minute.
They were however unable to find equaliser with Spain advancing to semi-finals where they will face either hosts France Korea DPR.
