The Benue State Police Command has detained five individuals suspected of identity theft and cyber fraud, according to a statement from the command’s public relations officer, SP Sewuese Anene, in Makurdi on Friday.

The suspects, aged 18 to 21, were apprehended by the police’s cybercrime and narcotics department following intelligence that led operatives to their hideout in Makurdi.

During the raid, officers recovered several items, including “three iPhones, one small Tecno phone, and two other smartphones,” Ms. Anene said.

The investigation revealed that the suspects had allegedly been impersonating others to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

The Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, warned residents to be vigilant of cybercriminals and reassured the public of the command’s commitment to combating cybercrime in the state.

Mr. Yabanet also issued a warning to individuals involved in cybercrime, urging them to cease such activities or “face the consequences of their actions.”

He added that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation concludes.
