At least five people were rescued alive, while three others were confirmed dead after a passenger bus plunged into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday.

Its Chairman, Mr Maroof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call on Wednesday from Mrs Fadeke Yusuf and immediately deployed personnel to the scene.

“On arrival, we found a Suzuki bus with registration number LEW 484 XA (Osun) carrying eight passengers, which had lost control and crashed into the river,” Akinwande stated.

He added that five passengers were rescued and taken to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area, while the three deceased were handed over to police officers from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters, led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim.

Akinwande attributed the accident to reckless driving and urged motorists to always observe road safety rules to prevent such incidents.

He also commended the support of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency, Ona-Ara Division, and the Chairman of Ona-Ara Local Government, Glorious Temitope, during the rescue operation.
