A senior government source has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe in Guinea-Bissau following the recent military takeover in the country.

The source, who spoke on Thursday on condition of anonymity, said arrangements are being made for Jonathan’s return to Nigeria.

A multinational task force, including Nigerian personnel, is reportedly in Guinea-Bissau to ensure the safety of Jonathan and other Nigerian officials currently in the country.

“Nigeria is taking the necessary steps to ensure their security and facilitate their return,” the source stated.

The development comes after the Federal Government condemned the coup and called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.

Jonathan is among 36 high-profile observers trapped in the country. They were part of a joint mission of the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) monitoring the presidential election held last Sunday.

Military officers declared “total control” of Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, closing its borders and suspending the electoral process just three days after the general elections.

The takeover followed claims by President Umaro Embaló, seeking re-election, and his main opponent, Fernando Dias, that they had won the election, despite no official results from the electoral commission.
