French Govt Collapses As PM Michel Barnier Loses No-Confidence Vote

The French government has descended into turmoil following the collapse of Prime Minister Michel Barnier‘s administration after a dramatic no-confidence vote in parliament.

The motion, backed overwhelmingly by 331 MPs, marks the first time a French government has been toppled in such a manner since 1962.

The vote comes just three months after Barnier, a former Brexit negotiator, was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron.

His administration faced backlash for using controversial special powers to push through a budget laden with €60bn deficit reduction measures, sparking outrage from opposition parties and citizens alike.
