Fresh flooding has struck Kpautagi in Mokwa, Niger State, following heavy overnight rainfall on Saturday, June 14, leaving residents in fear for their safety.

A verified video obtained by SaharaReporters showed the community submerged after the torrential downpour that lasted through the night into the morning.

Residents said they are yet to confirm the number of casualties or the full extent of the destruction.

This incident comes on the heels of an earlier flood in Mokwa, which claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands.

Eyewitnesses had described harrowing scenes, with bodies seen scattered across the area and families searching for missing relatives.

A review of Niger State’s budget performance documents by SaharaReporters revealed that the government spent N5.762 billion on honorarium and sitting allowances between January 2024 and March 2025.

In contrast, only N5.1 billion was allocated to erosion and flood control within the same period.

Further analysis showed that in 2024 alone, N4.813 billion went to honorarium and allowances, while just N2.2 billion was used for flood control.

Between January and March 2025, the state spent N949.2 million on allowances and N2.9 billion on flood-related issues.

The state and its local governments received a total of N3.208 billion in ecology funds in 2024—support meant specifically for addressing environmental challenges like flooding.
