From Love To Tragic Losses: Biggest Moments That Shaped Nollywood In 2024

Nollywood, Africa’s leading film industry, witnessed a year filled with emotional highs and devastating lows in 2024. The industry, known for its vibrant storytelling and captivating personalities, experienced moments that not only kept fans glued to their screens but also left many reflecting on the realities of life.

From heartwarming unions to heartbreaking goodbyes, these events marked the year as one of the most eventful in Nollywood’s history.

Weddings

One of the most celebrated highlights of 2024 was the glamorous weddings that swept through the industry. Fans were thrilled as some of Nollywood’s finest walked down the aisle in grand style.

Actor Kunle Remi tied the knot with his American-based sweetheart, Boluwatiwi, in a lavish ceremony tagged #KTTV24. Sharon Ooja, another household name, exchanged vows with businessman Ugo Nwoke in a breathtaking traditional and white wedding that dominated social media.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Charles Okocha, popularly known as Igwe 2Pac, surprised fans with pre-wedding photos before tying the knot with Mimi in a private ceremony.

Biodun Okeowo, famously called Omoborty, also had her fairytale wedding, leaving fans in awe.

*Deaths*

However, the joy was marred by sorrow as the industry mourned the loss of several iconic figures. In February, legendary storyteller Jimi Solanke passed away at the age of 81, leaving a legacy that will forever resonate in Nigerian theatre and film.

Just a month later, the industry was shaken by the deaths of beloved comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, and versatile actor Amaechi Muonagor.

The tragic loss of Junior Pope in a boat accident during a movie shoot further plunged the industry into mourning, while the passing of Yoruba icon Charles Olumo (Agbako) at 101 marked the end of an era.

Rising star Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, fondly called Sisi Quadri, also passed away at the young age of 44, shocking fans and colleagues alike.

Blockbusters

Nollywood’s creative brilliance, however, continued to shine despite the tragedies. The year saw the release of groundbreaking films that left audiences captivated.

Blockbusters like Tribe Called Judah by Funke Akindele, Breath of Life by Eku Edewor, and House of Ga’a by Bolanle Austen-Peters broke records and received widespread acclaim.

Other notable productions included Lisabi: The Uprising by Adebimpe Oyebade and Victoria Akujobi, Beast of Two Worlds by Eniola Ajao, and Seven Doors by Femi Adebayo. These films highlighted Nollywood’s resilience and commitment to excellence in storytelling.

As 2024 drew to a close, the Nigerian film industry stood tall amidst its triumphs and trials. The year was a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring legacy of art. Fans, colleagues, and industry insiders continue to celebrate the memories of those who left too soon while looking forward to the stories yet to be told in Nollywood’s ever-evolving journey.
