Fubara Breached Impeachment Agreement — Wike
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday spoke on the political tensions in Rivers State, disclosing details of an alleged secret agreement involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking with journalists during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike said a political understanding allegedly brokered by President Bola Tinubu shaped recent developments in Rivers politics.
He said the deal involved Siminalayi Fubara agreeing to step away from a second-term ambition in exchange for the withdrawal of impeachment moves against him by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Wike criticised the governor for initially obtaining nomination forms despite the alleged agreement, describing the action as a breach of political trust.
According to him, the arrangement was meant to ensure that impeachment proceedings were halted while Fubara refrained from pursuing a second term.
“In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure.
“By collecting the form first, he didn’t show signs of gentlemanship. He didn’t show that sign, and that was not expected. We thought that Mr President had been intervening severally and pleading with the legislature not to continue with impeachment,” he said.
He added that President Bola Tinubu had made several interventions aimed at stabilising the political situation in the state.
On the emergence of Kingsley Chinda, Wike said the lawmaker remained a strong political figure with experience in both the executive and legislative arms of government.
He described Chinda as “a good product” who, in his view, commands respect within political circles and may have attracted interest from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“A good product markets itself. Everybody knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material. He’s quite experienced. He has worked with the executive and now in the legislature — you can hear his voice when he was a minority leader of the PDP. I’m sure that he must have been approached by the ruling All Progressives Congress to join them and then get the ticket,” Wike stated.
Wike also noted that the day was a positive one for him as he inspected several near-completed infrastructure projects across Abuja, including roads and key city developments.
The projects include the Renewed Hope City in Karsana, the Old Keffi Road in Dei Dei, the Airport Road to Kuje corridor, and the Kuje to Gwagwalada phase one project.
He further mentioned the City Gate project, executed by Julius Berger, which he said was a brainchild of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and is nearing completion with delivery expected between late May and early June.
