GAC Divided Over Impeachment Of Obasa
The Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) appears to be at odds following the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on allegations of misconduct.
While some members of the GAC, among whom is Senator Anthony Adefuye, have expressed support for Obasa, others, including Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, have condemned Adefuye’s stance, calling it “childish and irresponsible.”
Obasa was impeached on January 13 by his colleagues in the Lagos Assembly, who replaced him with the former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
The former speaker, however, insists that his removal was illegal, citing procedural irregularities.
Speaking to his supporters in Ikeja on Saturday, Obasa declared that he remains the legitimate Speaker of the House and intends to resume his legislative duties soon.
He also denied allegations of corruption brought against him by the lawmakers.
In a recent interview, Senator Adefuye lent his support to Obasa, asserting that his impeachment did not follow due process.
“What he is saying is that he was illegally removed, and the procedure was faulty, and I agree with him,” Adefuye said.
This statement has drawn sharp criticism from another GAC member, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who described Adefuye’s remarks as reckless and unbecoming of a statesman.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, Obanikoro stated, “The statement of Senator Adefuye on the removal of the former speaker Mudashiru Obasa is very unfortunate, childish, and inconsequential.”
Obanikoro further emphasized the importance of respecting hierarchy within the GAC, noting that no individual member should make public statements on sensitive issues without a collective decision by the council.

“Since GAC as a unit has not made any pronouncement on the subject matter, it is irresponsible of any member of that privileged body to go public and make comments on an issue that is as sensitive as that,” he said.
The former Minister of Defence also highlighted the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the matter, urging GAC members to exercise restraint and allow due process to prevail.
“Moreso, our leader, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, waded in on the matter, so I believe nobody should come out individually to express an opinion based on privileged status,” Obanikoro added.
