Gbenga Hashim Quits PDP Over Failed Reconciliation
A presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Hashim, has resigned from the party, citing deep internal divisions and failed attempts at reconciliation.
In a letter dated April 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Hashim said his resignation takes immediate effect.
He described the party as being engulfed in “persistent and unending crises” for over a year, resulting in its split into two dominant factions.
The former deputy national publicity secretary said he and other stakeholders had made several attempts to reconcile the factions and restore unity, but the efforts failed, further weakening the party.
Hashim alleged that the ongoing crisis appeared partly orchestrated to undermine the PDP’s viability as an opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He warned that the situation could prevent the party from fielding credible candidates or reduce it to a passive supporter of the incumbent administration.
“I cannot, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values,” Hashim said, noting that remaining in the party under current conditions would betray his principles.
He also highlighted the country’s worsening insecurity, loss of lives, and economic hardship, stressing that it would be inconsistent with his convictions to stay in any arrangement that seems to legitimise these challenges.
Hashim described the PDP’s state as disheartening, blaming internal divisions and self-interest for its decline from a once formidable political force.
He said he would now work with other patriotic Nigerians to prevent a one-party state and build a new political order focused on security, justice, and economic prosperity.
