GBV: Rapists To Be Castrated In Kaduna — Official

In its bid to guard against all forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV), especially rape, the Kaduna State government has disclosed that male rapists will suffer surgical castration as punishment

The state Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu who disclosed this also noted that female rapists will undergo bilateral salpingectomy.

This was made known at a press conference in Kaduna on Thursday after a meeting with stakeholders organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Centre for Integrated Health Programs (CIHP).

She also said that punitive measures were contained under the Kaduna State Government Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL), 2018.

The law, according to her, followed a lengthy process of advocacy, lobbying and awareness raised by civil society organizations in the state in collaboration with relevant government agencies.

Also speaking, Dr. Austin Azihaiwe, the state Technical Lead for CIHP said the day marked 16-day activism against GBV, which was also referred to as the ‘Orange the World’ Campaign and began in 1991.

He said, “The essence of these activities is to bring all stakeholders together and harness their resources and capacity to ensure that the fight against GBV is made more impact in our communities.”
