The digital payment giant, PayPal, on Thursday, suffered a massive global outage that left thousands of users stranded and unable to access their accounts.
Reports indicate that the disruption, which began around 11:00 am GMT, caused widespread login failures across PayPal’s mobile app and website, sparking fears of a potential security breach.
According to Down Detector, a platform that tracks service disruptions, over 6,000 complaints were logged within the first hour of the outage, with nearly 90% of users citing login issues.
This led to a wave of frustration across social media platforms, with users venting their anger over the inability to access their funds or complete transactions.
“It seems PayPal is having a complete meltdown, as nobody can login or get through via their call centre,” one user, Paul_02 vented on X.
Many users initially feared that the platform had been hacked, given the nature of the login issues. “I thought my account was compromised, but now it looks like the whole system is down,” another user, JettyCare_001 shared.

@KenLin1985 said: “Is anyone having issues with PayPal? I can’t log in to my PayPal account right now. It keeps showing the message, ‘Please check your entries and try again’.”
However, despite the panic, there has been no evidence to suggest a cyberattack, and PayPal has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the disruption.
The company’s silence has further fueled speculation and anxiety among its global user base, who rely heavily on the platform for personal and business transactions.
The outage has raised critical concerns about the platform’s reliability and preparedness to handle such large-scale disruptions.
For many users, the inability to access funds during the downtime has caused significant inconvenience, with some questioning PayPal’s contingency measures in the face of technical failures.
As the disruption persisted into the afternoon, social media buzz continued to intensify. “PayPal outage had me convinced my account was hacked, and now I need some time for my adrenaline to settle down,” one frustrated user, Ventiy126 tweeted.
The incident also underscores the vulnerability of global financial systems heavily reliant on digital payment platforms like PayPal. With millions of users worldwide, any disruption of this scale has far-reaching consequences, affecting businesses, freelancers, and everyday users alike.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the outage remains unclear, and users are anxiously awaiting an explanation from PayPal. This unprecedented disruption serves as a reminder of the critical need for robust infrastructure and effective communication channels in the fast-evolving world of digital finance.
