Citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a civil society organisation has made an appeal to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider other options in pressing home its demands other than incessant strikes.
While appealing to ASUU and the Federal Government to continue to dialogue, the group through the convener, Pelumi Olajengbesi called on the Nigerian government to prioritise education for the development of the Country.
Olajengbesi said “Education is fundamental for any society to grow, any society that under estimates the importance of education will face problems of underdevelopment” Olajengbesi said.
“UNESCO recommended that every developing nation like Nigeria should at least budget 25 to 26 percent of its annual budget into education.
“If education is not prioritised in Nigeria the young Nigerians will grow up and disappoint the society by messing up other development all the structures that would have been put in place. The Nigerian government must prioritise education.
“We also need to caution the leadership of ASUU we are in a developed society although the demands of the Union are genuine but they are not complying the requirements of the law on strike, the trade issue acts demands that in section 41 of it, before any union or organisation will proceed on any strike, such organisation is mandated to give a notice of 14days to the government or whoever it may concern, unfortunately ASUU has refused to comply”. Olajengbesi said.
ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike o the 14th of August, asking for the Federal Government to implement some earlier agreed conditions.
