Suspected gunmen have killed a police inspector attached to the Oyo State Police Command during a patrol operation at the Budo Masalasi border post in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident, saying the patrol team was ambushed by the assailants during routine security surveillance.
The officer, identified as Inspector Aliu Oluwole, reportedly died while bravely repelling the attack.
The attackers also seized his service AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, bearing breach number 4516.
Ayanlade said the Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen firearm.
“Preliminary findings reveal that some of the attackers sustained gunshot injuries and are being pursued by security operatives,” he said.
He described the attack as a heinous act and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
The police assured residents that enhanced security measures have been deployed across the state and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
