Hamas Rejects Ceasefire Talks, Accuses Israel Of Waging Hunger War
Hamas has rejected ongoing ceasefire negotiations with Israel, accusing the Israeli government of waging a “hunger war” against Palestinians in Gaza.
This statement comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region as Israel moves forward with plans for a broader military offensive.
Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, stated, “There is no sense in engaging in talks or considering new ceasefire proposals as long as the hunger war and extermination war continue in the Gaza Strip.”
The rejection comes as Israel’s security cabinet approved a military strategy on May 5, which includes the potential conquest and occupation of Gaza.
With over 2.3 million residents, Gaza is facing immense displacement, with many people having been uprooted multiple times since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.
Despite Qatar’s efforts to broker a ceasefire, talks have stalled.
Israel insists on a limited truce and Hamas’s disarmament, while Hamas demands a permanent end to the conflict.
The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate, with aid groups warning of an imminent famine.
Gaza’s civil defence reports rising casualties, including children, from daily airstrikes.
China has expressed “deep concern” over the crisis, while France has condemned the planned Israeli offensive as a breach of international law.
The death toll continues to climb, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting 2,459 new fatalities since March 18, bringing the total to over 52,500.
Hamas’s attacks on Israel have also claimed about 1,200 lives.
