Two people have been confirmed dead in a fresh attack by armed herdsmen in the Umogidi community in Entekpa Ward of Adoka District in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The latest attack, which came a few days after 10 people were killed in a similar attack in the community, also left several people injured.
A local of the area, Joseph Adakole, who claimed that the deceased were his uncle and cousin, said the marauders stormed the community on Thursday evening and opened fire on the victims.
“The herdsmen attacked Umogidi again in the evening of Thursday and killed some people and left others injured. The two that were confirmed dead so far were my relatives. One was my uncle, and the other was a cousin,” he said.
Reacting, the Caretaker Chairman of Otukpo, Alfred Omakwu, said aside from killing the two victims, the marauders also engaged the military and security personnel deployed to the area.
He further said that the attackers, after retreating, threatened to stage a comeback, but calm had returned to the community.
“From Friday, there has been calm, and the military presence has increased. But we are still receiving threats from them. Two of our youths were killed on Thursday. At the point of their entry into the community, they engaged those and the military too,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent, SP Catherine Anene, said she had not received information on the development.
