The Police in Adamawa state on Wednesday dispersed hoodlums, who tried to hijack what was intended to be peaceful procession by the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) Adamawa state chapter, in response to the killings in parts of the state.
Reports earlier claimed that the shootings around the popular police roundabout in the state were informed by an attempt by hoodlums to take on the police in order to introduce violence to the peaceful procession by CAN.
Adamawa CAN Secretary-General, Rev. Eli Shama said those who went out to demonstrate were not part of the earlier scheduled procession plan to go to the Government House to air their concern over the ongoing killings in the state.
He said that CAN leadership had envisaged the possibility of the procession being hijacked and turned bloody in Adamawa, hence after converging in the Church earlier this morning explained the situation to their members and asked everyone to return home.
“If there are people who went out to demonstrate and engage with the police, I am assuring you that they are not part of CAN but hoodlums who have bad motive towards the planned procession CAN wanted to embark on today,” Shama said.
Also speaking, the Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa state, SP Othman Abubakar confirmed to our correspondent that the police have disperse the hoodlums, and debunked claims that the shootings were meant to prevent CAN from embarking on peaceful procession in the state.
He also denied rumours making the rounds that the hoodlums vandalized two police vehicles.
