How Police Stormed Our Community, Assaulted Chiefs, Pregnant Woman — Egbedi Community Narrates
The Egbedi community in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State has debunked reports alleging that its residents attacked and assaulted police officers during a recent incident in the town.
Reacting to a viral video showing some police officers from Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, being confronted by residents, the Agbaakin of Egbedi, Chief Ganiu Taoreed, said the incident occurred after officers allegedly assaulted members of the community, including a pregnant woman.
Chief Taoreed made the clarification while speaking with OSUN DEFENDER on Friday.
Recall that police officers had visited the community on Monday, May 4, 2026, to effect arrests in connection with the lingering land dispute between Egbedi and Iloba communities.
According to him, contrary to claims circulating online, the officers stormed the town alongside suspected thugs from Ede and began arresting residents, allegedly at the instance of some individuals from Iloba.

“What happened on Monday morning was different from what has been portrayed online. Police officers, accompanied by some thugs from Ede, suddenly invaded our community and started arresting our people on the directive of some Iloba indigenes,” he alleged.

He further claimed that several chiefs and members of the royal household were injured during the operation.
“In the process, some of our chiefs, wives of the Elegbedi, and the pregnant wife of the Babakere of Egbedi were assaulted. The pregnant woman was beaten until she fainted,” Chief Taoreed said.
He added that the situation escalated after the officers allegedly fired teargas and gunshots while attempting to leave the community.

“They started shooting and firing teargas at residents while trying to escape. It was at that point that some women in the community confronted the officers who allegedly assaulted the women. It is not true that our people attacked police officers,” he stated.
Chief Taoreed also disclosed that the Ajiroba of Egbedi, Chief Isa Adesina, sustained injuries during the incident.
The community leader called for an impartial investigation into the matter, insisting that residents were only reacting to what they described as excessive use of force by the security operatives.
