How To Get Past Self Doubt

As humans, we tend to think less of ourselves each time we assume a new role or given a new responsibility. Oftentimes, we are inspired with amazing business ideas, to learn new skill, a trade, taking an exam or a more challenging role etc. These are adventure that can raise our portfolio and benefit out lives but then after mapping out plans on their execution, a thought may cross our minds telling us we may not achieve the desired result. The scary thought that make your heart race in negativity about that adventure you want to embark on is called self doubt.

Self Doubt is a flaw present in the mind of all creatures. It is an inner war that must be fought by every progress seeking individual because it is a killer of dreams. It prevents us from taking action, going after what we want, pursuing our dreams, and developing a sense of connection with the people we care about.

Do you have a dream you are passionate about but the fear of failure has been holding you back? Have you always wonder how to get yourself freed from this negative thoughts? Worry less, grab yourself a popcorn as I take you through the journey of fighting your inner obstacle called self doubt.

Self-doubt can be an unpleasant experience and is often experienced in unconscious ways. When doubts arise, it’s important to remember that it’s okay to have shortcomings; everyone does. We should take time for self-reflection, acknowledging the efforts we make instead of only focusing on what we think are our shortcomings. It is also important to recognise when doubt arises, as this can help us move past it and develop confidence in ourselves over time. With conscious effort and understanding, getting past self-doubt becomes more achievable with the following steps:

  1. Practice Self-Compassion

Self-doubt means that you are holding yourself back. It arises from the fear of making a mistake, but mistakes are how we grow and improve our own abilities. Look at yourself in the mirror and say three positive affirmations at the beginning of every day. It is said that our words create our reality and that includes both the words we say and the words we think. Identifying your limiting beliefs is the first step thus, you must fight back against them. Changing your self-talk is a powerful way to turn self-doubt into self-confidence. Stop believing everything your inner critic says. Argue with it. Eventually, your inner critic will turn into your inner champion.By doing this, you already prophesize positive words into your life, not only will that reassure you, it will also make you see adversities in a positive light per adventure your expectations didn’t eventually fall through.

2. Try Not To Compare Yourself To Others 

It is normal to appreciate people’s achievement and wish to attain such but it is disastrous to feel jealous of them. Jealousy can stirr up a feeling of negativity and self-doubt will make you measure yourself up against a family member, colleague, or even a celebrity. Everyone’s life is different, and someone else excelling doesn’t mean you don’t have any strengths. Instead of comparing yourself to others,  focus on yourself. It is one of the best ways to stay happy and accomplish your dreams.

3. Spend Time With Supportive People

Being around people who put us down is one of the worst things for our mental health. Some people won’t support you, but others absolutely will. Spend your time with people who make you feel good; they can build you up when you’re struggling to encourage yourself. Knowing that you have support if needed gives confidence in yourself and your work. Additionally, talking with family and friends provides esteem-building advice from people who care about you. Taking actionable steps like this can help overcome fears of self-doubt while increasing your self-esteem along the way.

4. Build Resilience

Be aware that you will experience setbacks because setbacks are a part of any transformation. If you don’t hit a wall once in a while, you’re not pushing hard enough. However, The difference between those who know how to overcome self-doubt and those who let it hold them back is inner strength. They see self-doubt for what it truly is: fear. This allows them to find the lessons in their failures, get up and keep going.

5. Take Action

Decisiveness is a sign of confidence. Leaders know that at some point, you need to stop wondering how to get rid of self-doubt and take action. Stop making excuses. Stop seeking advice from every friend and acquaintance. Start working toward real, actionable goals. It’s okay to start small. The more you achieve, the more you will build confidence and eliminate self-doubt for good.

On a final note, remember you are your biggest critics and no one holds us to a higher standard than ourselves. Since you wouldn’t put down your friend for not being chosen for a job or your sister for not receiving top marks in her school exams, so why do that to yourself? Apologizing to yourself is one of the most important steps toward healing and moving forward. Therefore, start off by looking at yourself from a different perspective, have faith in yourself, take risks, but also don’t forget to enjoy the journey too!
