Human Trafficking Deserves More Attention

The cases of human trafficking is becoming alarming in various states of Nigeria and the nation as a whole, as numerous individuals are being held captive for slavery, labour, sex, drugs proliferation and such other menace.

Human trafficking is the trade in people, especially women and children and does not necessarily involve movement of persons from one place to another.

Human trafficking is a crime that is being perpetrated on young people, especially women and girls as the number of teens being trafficked across various states of the federation calls for great concern.

It is considered to be one of the fastest growing activities of trans-national criminal organisations. It is condemned as a violation of human right by international conventions.

It may encompasses providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage or the extraction of organs or tissues, including for surrogacy and oval removal.

Unfortunately, inadequate funding of laws enforcement, recovery teams and provision of places for rehabilitation are facing rejection in our legislation because of budgetary constraints.

However, it is important that awareness should be increased to tackle human trafficking in the country, as it has caused damage to lives of many.

One major area that should also be considered is that the legislative arm of government should give more attention to the issues having to do with human trafficking in form of legislation, with a view to curbing such cases.
