HURIWA Describes Attack on Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as Threat to Democracy
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the attempted assassination of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the attack as a threat to democracy and national stability.
The incident reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Senator’s family residence in Obeiba-Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the Chief Security Officer to the Senator, Mr. Yakubu Ovanja, said the matter was reported to relevant security agencies. He revealed that at least three armed assailants wielding cutlasses and firearms attacked the building, shattering windows and vandalising property.
Security operatives from the Okehi Police Division responded swiftly and were able to prevent further escalation.
“No casualties were reported and no arrests have been made so far, but preliminary investigations are ongoing,” police sources said.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA called for immediate action.
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is one of the most vocal advocates for constitutional democracy and equal opportunities in Nigeria.
“Her safety must be guaranteed at all costs. This attack is a threat not only to her life but also to democratic values in the country,” the statement read.
The group further warned that the attack must not be taken lightly and that those responsible must face justice.
“This is a brazen and alarming attack on democracy. We call for a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of the perpetrators.”
HURIWA also urged security agencies to take proactive steps to ensure the Senator’s safety and warned that any harm to her would endanger national peace.
The group noted that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously raised alarm about threats to her life.
“While the organisation cannot independently confirm such claims, we urge security agencies to act with urgency and impartiality to prevent any recurrence,” it said.
The association concluded by advising political stakeholders to avoid inflammatory actions and embrace legal means of resolving disputes.
