A middle-aged woman who jumped into Gbodofon, Osun River on Tuesday, was rescued by the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the command, ASC Kehinde Adeleke, a member of the public made a distress call to the Search and Rescue Team of the command.
Adeleke said the woman claimed she came to Osogbl from Iragbiji to jump into the Gbodofon River because she was feeling fire burning in her body.
The spokesperson said the team got to the scene in less than ten minutes and rescued the victim.
She added that the woman was resuscitated before she was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
“After becoming conscious as a result of first aid treatment initially provided by the NSCDC team, the middle-aged woman explained that she came all the way from Iragbiji to Osogbo for her to jump into Gbodofon River because she was feeling fire burning in her body and the only way to quench the fire was to jump into Osun river.”
The Search and Rescue Team, led by DSC Ishola Oluyinka, were commended by the Commandant of NSCDC in the state, Agboola Sunday, for being responsive and for bringing their training in disaster management to bear in such a critical situation that could have claimed the life of a fellow citizen.
Agboola assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He enjoined them to take care of their mental health, stressing that his men would pay close attention to all the rivers in the state to avoid future occurrences.
