I Never Accused Tinubu Of Creating Militia to Sway Election — Daniel Bwala

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has denied ever accusing the president of creating a militia to influence the 2023 election.

Bwala made the clarification during an appearance on Head to Head, a programme on Al Jazeera hosted by Mehdi Hasan.

The episode, themed “Nigeria: ‘Renewed Hope’ or ‘Hopelessness’?”, examined the Tinubu administration, with Hasan confronting Bwala with past comments and video clips from when he was in the opposition and aligned with the presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar.

During the interview, Hasan referred to a remark allegedly made by Bwala on January 22, 2023, claiming that Tinubu had created a militia to corruptly influence the election.

“You said Tinubu started a militia to sway the election corruptly,” Hasan said.

Bwala, however, denied making the statement.

“Tinubu didn’t create a militia, and I never said that,” he responded.

Hasan also cited another alleged comment about suspicious cash movements into Tinubu’s residence during the election period.

Bwala again rejected the claim.

“I never said that,” he said.

Clips circulating on social media had previously shown Bwala accusing Tinubu or members of his political camp of threatening him, including claims of intimidation following his criticism of the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

When questioned about those allegations during the interview, the presidential aide again denied making such claims.

“I never said that,” he said.

Bwala explained that the earlier remarks attributed to him were made while he was part of the political opposition.

According to him, “the job of opposition is to oppose.”

He added that the comments were part of political rhetoric at the time and should not be interpreted the same way now that he is serving in government defending the president’s policies.
