Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kanu Agabi, has debunked claims that officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) denied him and members of his legal team access to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Agabi, who leads Kanu’s defence team, made the clarification on Wednesday during the resumed hearing of the terrorism trial before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Omotosho had sought clarification on a social media post attributed to one of the defence lawyers, Alloy Ejimakor, alleging that the DSS had barred Kanu’s legal team from seeing their client on Tuesday.

Responding, Agabi said there was no such incident and blamed the confusion on Ejimakor.

He further lauded the conduct of DSS operatives, describing them as respectful and professional.

“I was not denied access to the defendant. We had initially arranged to go there together – myself, Ikpeazu, Etiaba, and Erokoro – but for some reasons, they were not available.

“When I got to the DSS facility around 1pm, they told me the list containing our names had not yet arrived. To be fair to them, they showed me a great deal of respect. I told them I would come back another day,” Agabi said.

The former AGF expressed shock and disappointment upon learning that a fellow member of the legal team had taken to social media to claim he was denied access to Kanu.

“I was surprised, and frankly, I was angry when I heard that someone on our team had put such misleading information online,” he said.

When asked by the presiding judge to explain his actions, Ejimakor said he assumed Agabi had been denied access because the former AGF sounded upset during a phone conversation.

However, Agabi clarified that his anger stemmed not from the DSS, but from the confusion caused by Ejimakor giving him the wrong time for the visit.e visit.
