Bello El‑Rufai, member of the House of Representatives for Kaduna North and son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai, has publicly apologised for his past criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He confessed that his comments at the time were born of youthful naivety, unaware of the governance successes of the Jonathan administration.

Speaking on Channels Television’s annual June 12 programme on Thursday evening, Bello recalled a defining moment that prompted his change of heart. “When I was naïve or when I thought ego or gratification mattered … I used to be very active in criticising President Jonathan,” he said.

However, witnessing his father preparing to meet Jonathan for political consultation sparked a moment of realisation. He immediately conveyed remorse, urging his father to tell the former president: “Please … tell him I am very sorry, I am wiser now.”

He further commended Jonathan for upholding democratic principles by conceding defeat after losing the 2015 election.

Bello stated, “It takes a lot, particularly in Africa, to lose an election and leave.”

He acknowledged that his former relationship with Jonathan had been strong, and regretted lending a voice to “unnecessary” criticism following the emergence of Vice‑President Namadi Sambo.
