Nigerian singer, Alexander Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has revealed a harrowing experience he endured in 2010, which he described as a spiritual attack that nearly claimed his life.

The ‘Gongo Aso’ crooner made the disclosure during a recent interview on The Nancy Isime Show, where he opened up about the toll the mysterious affliction took on his health and personal beliefs.

9ice recounted that he began vomiting blood inexplicably for six months, a condition he stressed was not medically diagnosed and eventually forced him to abandon his home.

“When I was vomiting blood for about six months in my own house, I had to leave. It wasn’t a medical condition,” he said.

The singer, who came into national prominence with his award-winning debut album Gongo Aso, added that the experience pushed him to seek alternative spiritual intervention after conventional avenues failed to yield results.

According to him, a friend introduced him to an Ifa priest, which ultimately brought him healing.

“The first time I experienced Ifa was when I was vomiting blood. Someone referred me to Ifa. I just wished that I had known Ifa at the beginning,” he stated.

9ice, who declared that he is neither a Christian nor a Muslim, said he now identifies as a traditionalist.

“I’m not a Christian or a Muslim, I’m a Babalawo. I’m an African. I’m a traditionalist,” he said, adding that he regrets not embracing African spirituality earlier in life.

Reflecting on the public mockery faced by Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, for his open practice of traditional religion, 9ice noted that he now understands Fela’s spiritual choices.

He also urged Africans to take pride in their roots and spiritual heritage rather than adopting foreign religions without understanding their origins.
