Ibadan Residents Renew Call for Ban on Commercial Motorcycles After Fatal Highway Crash
Residents of Ibadan have renewed calls for a ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, on major highways following a fatal accident on Tuesday at Iyana Felele along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The crash, which occurred on the busy stretch of road, involved a commercial motorcycle and a vehicle. Eyewitnesses reported that the collision resulted in the instant death of the rider and at least two passengers.
The tragic incident threw the area into mourning and caused temporary traffic congestion as sympathisers and road users gathered at the scene.
Speaking with reporters, residents blamed the continued operation of commercial motorcycles on highways for the recurring loss of lives.
They described the development as a serious safety concern and urged the Oyo State Government and relevant traffic authorities to enforce existing regulations restricting okada operations on major roads strictly.
“This is not the first time such a tragedy has happened here. Motorcycles are not designed for highways,” a resident lamented.
