Ibas Faces Backlash For Retrieving Official Vehicles From Suspended Deputy

Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), has come under criticism for ordering the retrieval of three official vehicles from the residence of suspended Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu.

The operation, which took place in the early hours of Friday, April 25, reportedly involved naval personnel and state government officials who stormed Odu’s Port Harcourt residence and took away two Toyota Hilux vans and a Toyota Hiace bus.

Democracy Watch Nigeria condemned the action, describing it as a “commando-style raid” aimed at humiliating a constitutionally recognised office.

The group’s spokesperson, Elder Vincent Chimene Wopara, accused the sole administrator of abusing his power and using military force for political purposes.

“This marks a new low in the ongoing disregard for due process and democratic norms,” Wopara said, urging civil society groups and the international community to take note of what it termed the “growing trend of militarisation” in Rivers State.

“We call on well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the international community to take note of this growing trend of militarisation and impunity in Rivers State. It is imperative that those in positions of authority act within the bounds of the law and uphold the dignity of democratic institutions.”

Responding, the Rivers State Government defended the move, insisting it was a routine administrative action to safeguard state assets.

In a statement signed by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Sole Administrator, the government questioned why the vehicles were still in Odu’s possession over a month after her suspension.

“The recovery of government property should not be twisted for political gain. The administration remains committed to protecting public assets and will not be distracted by mischief-makers,” the statement read.

“The Rivers State Government maintains that the recovery of its assets cannot reasonably be construed as executive overreach. This administration remains committed to prudent management of public resources and will not be distracted by baseless allegations.

“We urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from testing the resolve of an administration that has demonstrated remarkable patience in the face of persistent provocation. The public is advised to disregard sensationalised accounts of this incident and focus instead on the government’s ongoing efforts to restore stability and good governance in Rivers State.”

The state urged the public to ignore what it called “sensationalised accounts” of the incident.
