Despite scoring the goal that gave Enyimba a share of the spoils against Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club on Saturday, Ibrahim Mustapha says he is an unhappy man.
The former El-Kanemi Warriors striker pulled Enyimba out of the woods with an 85th-minute equaliser for the Aba side in a Matchday 13 Nigeria Professional Football League game.
Stephen Odey’s eighth goal of the season in the first half had given MFM the lead which they held onto before the equaliser in the 85th minute.
Enyimba substitute Ismaila Gata laid a lobbed pass into the path of Mustapha who spectacularly scored with an overhead kick past MFM goalkeeper Egbe Ospino.
The game ended 1-1 but Mustapha feels it was three points dropped rather than a point gained and said he would have been happier if Enyimba had won the game.
“I apologise to our fans all over the world for the draw. This is how football is most times. Our plans didn’t work out,” he told supersport.com.
“I respect MFM. They are a good side with young players but we should have done better than the draw. We tried our best but our best wasn’t good enough.
“As a striker I should be happy to score but I would have preferred I scored and we won than the draw we picked. MFM did quite well on the day but these things happen.”
Mustapha also spoke about the overhead kick goal and what it meant to him.
“I saw the ball come towards me, I had to think quick. The flight of the ball was too low for a header as I thought and the goal was to my back,” Mustapha revealed.
“The overhead kick was pure instinct on my path but I’m glad it went in. I’m glad it helped us get a point even though I would have wanted us to win.
“I dedicate the goal to my mother. She is my biggest supporter. The goal is for her.”
