IGP Bans Arms For Officers In Mufti, Warns Against Rights Violations
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered an immediate ban on policemen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire, warning that any human rights violations will attract severe consequences.
During a virtual meeting with senior officers, Egbetokun emphasised professionalism and respect for human rights.
He condemned the practice of operatives wielding assault weapons in mufti, citing numerous complaints received by the Force.

Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, reiterated the IGP’s directive, saying, “The IGP has made it clear that no operative should be seen carrying assault arms in mufti. Any violation of human rights will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences.”
The directive aims to curb police misconduct and improve public trust in law enforcement.
Adejobi further stated, “The IGP also warned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing, emphasising the importance of operating in approved uniforms. No operative should be seen carrying assault arms (rifles) while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).
“All tactical squads are to ensure compliance with the standard operating procedure while properly dressed in the assigned uniform for the particular squad,” the statement added.
