Ilesa N/East Parliament Moves To Generate Revenue

Ilesa North East Local Council Development Area (LCDA) parliament has stated that efforts would be made to guarantee improvement in revenue generation towards rapid development of the council.

The Leader of the House, Honourable Femi Olowe who stated this recently at a plenary of the council’s parliament also noted that there is the need for the council’s authority to double its efforts on the security of lives and properties.

Under matters of urgent public importance, the Deputy Leader, Hon. Sunday Adekanmi had stated the need to debate on how to control and generate revenue from the trailer and commercial vehicles using the brewery – Akure express roadside as park.

According to Adekanmi, there is need for the council’s authority to generate revenue without putting unnecessary burden on the people, saying, what is require is to be proactive in tapping the untapped avenues and block loopholes.

He then asked the house to mandate the council’s rate officer to appear before the parliament to explain the efforts of his office to improve revenue generation.

Also, the Vice Chairman, Hon. Mrs. Funmilola Ayoola urged the council to consider the menace being caused by Lorries parking along Imo-Brewery road while awaiting their turn to load merchandise from the Ilesa International Brewery without necessary returns to the council.

According to her, since the inauguration of the parliament, the council has not generated any money internally, even when there are available means to generate revenue.

She made reference to registered business centres that dotted the council area like petrol stations, small scale industries for processing vegetable oil, gaari, bakeries, local abattoirs among others.

The lawmaker then implored the house to mandate members to compile such centres under their jurisdiction and submit same for action.

Hon. Elizabeth Adetunji in her own contribution corroborated that for the past six months, the Rate Officers have been operating, but there are no record of any revenue generated, urging the house to summon them to give explanation on their activities.

While speaking, the council’s chairman, Honourable Oladipo Adeniyi noted that there are other anomalies being perpetrated by many council officials, even beyond the issue of IGR, urging the parliament to be diplomatic in handling the issues so that the move would not be misinterpreted.

The leader of the parliament, Olowe said that part of the efforts that would be made is to invite officials of finance department to explain more on the actual situation of the council’s IGR.

He regretted that for the last six months, the council only relied on allocations from the federal government, saying there are loopholes in the finances of the council which must be blocked.

He said there is need to suggest ideas that would help the council to avoid wallowing in wasteful spending.

The house subsequently appointed the Council Manager, Mr. Okelade Kehinde Ajibola, Hon. Adekanmi, Hon. Ayoola and Hon. Adetunji to visit the identified areas for revenue generation and report back to the house.
